“Who told me that to think where you are going was more important than to care where you are from?
A poet who told that not to return was the best might have already known that there was no destination but only repeated transfer and change of whereabouts as truth.
One person said “Be able to catch a single sigh of whom you love more than to be able to understand all the shouts of 50,000 people.”
Have you ever imagined how many lives breath in for the first time in this world and how many lives breathe out for the last time in this world within a moment when you inhale and exhale?
Do not forget, wherever you go you will be there.
A bird itself is not free, freedom has its own wings.
I wish all the thing to come back to this place, and wish them to hold you in their arms to celebrate their return.”
with love, Vagabond

The elderly lady walking in a station concourse seemed in trouble with her heavy bag, I tried to help her by carrying the bag and walking together with her.
By being grabbed her bag suddenly, she got surprised and looked at the person who reached her bag.
“Excuse me, but it seemed too heavy to you. Sorry to surprise you.”
So saying I smiled at her, she just kept looking at me.
“I’m sorry.”
I apologized again, she softened her expression and said “I thought you were a snatcher.”
“Nobody helps an old person like me in my hometown even when we are in trouble,” she said, and smiled at me with an embarrassed look.
“It was my fault, I should not have reached your bag from behind you. I will be careful next time.”
When I told her so, she remembered something and asked me.
“Where are you going now? Take this with you if you like,” she took out something small wrapped in cloth.
“I was going to give it to my son, but I will do it some other time.”
She told me to open the bundle with her eyes while I hesitated.
There were some strange shaped milky-white things wrapped in oiled paper inside.
“What are these?”
She looked at the wondering man’s face, and replied, “They are ankle bones of a wolf.”
“What? A wolf?” I heard myself repeating.
She then gently told me.
“Tie them up to yourself lower than your waist. God will find you and protect you.”
I was a bit confused.
“But these are an important charm for your son, aren’t they?”
“Don’t worry, just take them with you. You haven’t answered to my question yet by the way. Where are you going now?”
Feeling the wolf’s ankle bones in my hands, I answered. “I’m going home.”
She smiled calmly as she heard my answer.
“That’s one of the most important journeys in your life. I will pray for your safe return then.”
Gazing after her disappearing among the crowd behind ticket gates after exchanged our good-bye embraces, I quietly grasped the given charm in my pocket.

When I came to the spiral staircase, the man sitting on the third stair from the bottom stared up blankly.
It was difficult to tell where he was from; darkish skin, long wavy hair and stubble in thick black.
I hesitated a bit, but got closer to him, and looked up at the bottom of the spiral staircase, too.
Like a muzzle or lens, a small hole was staring back.
Five seconds or so passed, he noticed me and talked to me.
“Hey, what is up there?”
He meant something like that in language with a nostalgic ring that I might have heard somewhere before.
“Why don’t you check it out? It should be interesting.”
I answered in my language.
“Well, I asked you because I don’t want to be bothered,” he said in his language.
“The color of the staircases and the wall reminds me of my birthplace’s sky.”
“This blue color?”
The spiral staircase and the wall darkly wore greenish blue like an ocean, and that made us feel all the air around us humid.
“What would you say to me if I went up the stairs?”
I looked up the top of the stairs as I pretended to think.
The gun was stuck in my face.
I did not know if there was freedom or an end beyond that, but it seemed fascinating to me somehow.
“I would say “Bon voyage,”” I answered.
“Huh, it’s so boring,” though he said so, a gentle look came in his eyes.
“I will not go back to my hometown. To be precise, I cannot.”
I was gazing at him, could not ask him why.
His eyes were following a carve line of a staircase’s handrail.
I happened to see pockets of his trousers were well-stuffed.
“You have squeezed so many things,” I said so as I pointed at one of his pockets.
He stuck his hand into his pocket, and took out one toothbrush.
I laughed and said “You can live anywhere.”
“Even here,” he put his toothbrush back, and grinned meaningfully.
“Where are you going next?” I asked.
“Why not going up the stairs since I am here,” he answered while looking up.
“Okay, then I will be here until you reach the top. I will greet you from the bottom.”
“Well, do as you like. But don’t say “Bon voyage,” I’m already tired of any journey.”
So saying he gave me a wink, and began to go up the spiral staircase leisurely.

Panda

Long long ago, when there was no color in the world, and everything shined white during the daytime, everything was dyed pitch-black in the nighttime.

Like all other animate things the panda changed its color becoming a white bear under the sun, and a black bear at night.

Everything on earth became the same color at the same time, it was impossible to see other creatures.

Sometimes the wolf howled right next to the panda out of the blue, and made it frightened and run.

One day at daybreak just when a pitch-dark world was about to be brightly lit by the sunlight.

Suddenly a howl of the wolf began right beside the sleeping panda.

The half asleep panda had no idea what happened, it only put its hands over its ears.

Just then beams of the sunlight shone down on the ground.

The panda kept covering it ears and shutting its eyes.

The panda’s ears were totally covered from the sun, the night color remained there.

Even after the whole sun appeared, that night color didn’t disappear.

Everything else turned white, the black-colored ears stood out.

The panda was very shy, and tried to hide its ears desperately.

Because the panda touched its ears too much, the panda’s hands also got the night color.

This time the panda tried to hide its showy hands, but it did not go well.

The panda blindly folded its arms and put them around its own back, so eventually the panda’s arms and back turned black, too.

There was nothing the panda could do, it bursted out crying.

The panda rubbed over and over its misted eyes with tears, the night color soaked into around its eyes.

The panda was no longer like the rest of the creatures.

Thinking so, the panda sobbed loudly again with sadness.

However, the panda got the black and white pattern on its body, everybody else became able to see the panda.

Creatures around greeted the panda.

“Hello, dear panda!”

“How are you, dear panda?”

The wolf who scared the panda said,

“Take it easy, dear panda.”

Since the panda looks different, everyone noticed the panda’s presence.

When everybody noticed the panda’s presence, they all wanted to be friends with the panda.

It was somebody they found for the first time.

It was somebody who could find them no matter white or black.

When I was strolling in the Ueno shopping district one day, various words reached my ears.
“I want a pair of sneakers,”
and
“Hey, the previous shop was cheaper, wasn’t it?”
and
“I like to flow along the crowd,”
and so on.
“I never get tired of Ueno, this town is full of discoveries!”
This expression which one of a party of two girls said when I happened to pass them tells the charm of the Ueno shopping district plainly.

“We love Ueno.”
I will remember the scenes of this town that is filled with the strong feeling of Ueno natives for a long time.
