Tengyo Kura, a man without a sense of belonging to anywhere, meets Ueno natives, and based on what is told by them, Tengyo makes photo stories showing true charm of Ueno to the world.

Tengyo Kura
1972年生まれ。アーティスト、ストーリーテラー。国や地域を問わず教師をしながら暮らしてきた経験を土台に、自らをヴァガボンド（放浪する者）とし世界各地でメディア系ストーリーテリングの滞在制作をしている。滞在した地域の人々との交流を通じて、在住者（ネイティヴ）と訪問者（アウトサイダー）の関係性に揺らぎを生み出し、そこに多様なコミュニケーションの可能性を見出す活動を続ける。現代アーティストとのコラボレーション作品制作、様々な文化を紹介する交流イベントの企画、外国人ゲストに日本文化を紹介するツアーなどを実施している。
Born in Japan in 1972, Tengyo Kura has been living in different regions and countries for 16 years as a vagabond storyteller. By roaming between native and outsider, he continues his ‘culture dive’- a search for a potential creative evolution in communication around the world. Tengyo Kura collaborates with contemporary artists, plans and executes cultural exchange programs, makes cultural tours as well.

このプログラムは、上野観光連盟の事務総長・茅野雅弘さんとの出会いから始まりました。上野での幼少期の思い出や上野の街づくりへの情熱を聞かせていただき、上野のことをもっと知りたくなりました。そうして上野で暮らす人々の魅力を世界に発信するフォト・ストーリーをつくることを目標に、1月からインタビューを始めました。インタビューした方に次の方を紹介してもらうリレー形式で2ヶ月間、上野っ子の皆さんからお話を伺いました。皆さんの話を聞く度に新たな魅力あふれる上野っ子のお名前が出てくるので、本当はずっとインタビューを続けたかったです。作品制作にあたり、インタビューや撮影にご協力をいただいた上野の皆様をはじめ、黒門小学校の撮影・取材にご協力をいただいた千木良校長、瀧島副校長、育ての会の冨坂顧問、デザイナーの大原さん、上野「文化の杜」の富塚さん、広報活動など協力いただいたすべての皆様に深く感謝申し上げます。

This program began with my meeting with the secretary-general of Ueno Tourism Federation Mr. Masahiro Kayano. His childhood stories and his passion for the community development made me want to learn more about Ueno. So I started interviews with Ueno locals in January in order to make photo stories that show charm of Ueno to the world. The interviews went on in a relay style; the first one introduced me to the next one, then that one introduced me to the next. Each time a new unique person was named for the next interview, I really wish I could meet all of them! Here I would like to convey my deepest gratitude to all for their help on this program; all the interviewees in Ueno and around; Chigira Schoolmaster, Takishima Vice-Schoolmaster, and Tomisaka adviser of Kuromon Elementary school; Art Director Mr. Shinya Ohara; Program Officer Ms. Emi Tomizuka; all the supporters who assisted me with various activities.
